Sailors Delight Mobious Poncho
Handwoven wool shawl
Deep Violet
"Red sky at night, Sailor Delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning"
This phrase is well known to most in the costal towns of the maritime provinces. My paternal family were/are fishermen from Cape Breton. My father and brother sailors. Before the days of weather apps and 24h news, our families deciphered physical signs to determine if the seas were safe. A day off, meant no catch to sell and bellies empty. A day of fishing on the Atlantic ocean, caught in a storm, was frequently a death sentence. This saying was taught down the generations to help keep our fishermen and sailors safe. I still look at the sky, judging the weather, and have taught my own kids the saying. It's muttered whenever we see the pink hue on the horizon. "Red Sky at night. Sailor Delight" offers a promise of a better day on the horizon.
The threads are created by combining multiple fine threads to build a griadient inspired by the sunsets that glow pink light across the horizon. From a pale blue, through to pinks, oranges and reds, the threads blend with one another across the width of the shawl.
These shawls are handwoven in our Abbey Floor pattern, a turned twill motif inspired by the hand laid floors of midieval abbeys and churches. As a turned twill structure these shawls are DOUBLE SIDED. They each have a light and dark face. One side features the warp threads, while the reverse features the weft threads.
These exquisite handwoven shawls are crafted from vintage merino threads, mixed with 100% wool yarn, grown here on our farm and maritime milled, before being woven in our studio.
One size it fits a variety of body shapes, ages and totally unisex. The shawl had a variety of ways to be worn. These shawls are designed to be versatile and a working piece of your wardrobe. From vacation, to home, to work, to an evening out, these are your go to cozy choice. Our Ponchos can be work anyway that feels most comfortable to you. We suggest the 3 most popular ways;
1 - Place over the head and let settle over the shoulders creating a V at the back of the neck. The twist in the shawl will sit mid torso while the back comes to a point. Wearing it this way covers your entire torso and arms, while leaving arms free to move, knit, drive or dine.
2 - Place over the head with the twist on your back and the point placed centrally on the body. This covers less of your back, but covers more of the front and looks rather fancy. The arms are left free to dine, read or accept awards.
3 - This is my favorite way to wear my mobious shawl! Place the shawl over the head as in style 2, with the V hanging in the front. Then with a single twist, pull the shawl hanging in the back over your head. This creates a really full and cozy scarf. It's great at the rink to pull a bit up over your head, covers the front of the torso with lots of space to snuggle your cold nose down into. This option is shown by the additional photos of the "Icicle Shawl" in Navy Blue.
Each of our shawl collections are created in a limited run. Usually consisting of 7, unique pieces. Each shares the same warp, which the collection is based.
