Shield Maiden Poncho
Handwoven wool shawl
Blue
Shield Maiden collection was designed to reflect the mysterious women called "Shield Maidens". Originally known from period Norse sagas and myths, these women were told of as powerful warrior, leaders and the things of legend. Recent archeology, DNA testing and delving into history; is starting to change our concept of these amazing women. Old burials once considered "teen warriors" or other abstract burials are now being reopened and studied. Our understanding of these women and the roles they played in their communities is changing from mythical to real. Living, breathing, fighting, powerful.
The threads are created by combining multiple fine threads to create movement and shine within the texture of the textile of itself. The threads carry movement, shine and depth representing the Norse shields and swords used by these women warriors.
These shawls are handwoven in our Abbey Floor pattern, a turned twill motif inspired by the hand laid floors of midieval abbeys and churches. As a turned twill structure these shawls are DOUBLE SIDED. They each have a light and dark face. One side features the warp threads, while the reverse features the weft threads.
These exquisite handwoven shawls are crafted from vintage merino threads, mixed with 100% wool yarn, grown here on our farm and maritime milled, before being woven in our studio.
One size it fits a variety of body shapes, ages and totally unisex. The shawl had a variety of ways to be worn. These shawls are designed to be versatile and a working piece of your wardrobe. From vacation, to home, to work, to an evening out, these are your go to cozy choice. Our Ponchos can be work anyway that feels most comfortable to you. We suggest the 2 most popular ways;
1 - place over the head and let settle over the shoulders creating a V at the neckline and a point centered in the front and back of your body. Wearing it this way covers your entire torso and arms, while leaving arms free to move, knit, drive or dine.
2 - Place over the head with the seams along the should and upper arms. The points will fall, one on each side of the body. We find this way to be more formal looking, perfect over a trendy pantsuit or dress. The arms are left free to dine, read or accept awards while complimenting the clothing underneath.
3/4 - both of the above ways can be worn with the light/dark face showing - thus giving 4 individual looks to one shawl!
Each of our shawl collections are created in a limited run. Usually consisting of 7, unique pieces. Each shares the same warp, which the collection is based.
A functional textile and a wearable artwork, this shawl celebrates the journey from animal to yarn to finished cloth—honouring slow craft, natural fibre, and the beauty found in seasonal change.
